Sarah Dunn and Martin Felsen, partners in Chicago‐based practice UrbanLab, are inspired by the Japanese Metabolists, Charles Darwin's work on Ascension Island and the legacy of Superstudio. Their aim is to reinvigorate Superstudio's notion of positing alternative models of life on earth. Using this concept, they have been able to design urban landscapes that utilise the same flexible evolutionary strategies for a modern, digital and ecologically sensitive world. Here they illustrate their design imperatives with two projects, Filter Island in Chicago and Re‐Encampment in Death Valley, California.
